Marble Bar Race Day is the iconic social event of the year for the small township 200km east of Port Hedland. Visitors swell the population by about 800 and, once the dirt track’s dust has settled at sunset, many of them change into their finery to dance the light fantastic at the Marble Bar Ball, held in the Town’s Civic Centre. The local watering hole, the heritage- listed Ironclad Hotel, enjoys a thriving trade during the traditional mid-year weekend festivities. This year, Telfer’s General Manager, Paul Arndt, together with Support Services Manager Craig Thompson and the Community Relations team of Leon van Erp, Colin Tincknell and Rod Anthony, were among the hundreds of spectators to experience a unique day at the races. Newcrest sponsored one of the six races on the card, and Paul presented a trophy on behalf of Newcrest at the conclusion of the meeting. The sponsorship is a component of Newcrest’s expanding community relations portfolio. Newcrest supports significant local activities, events and services conducted in communities from as far away as Jigalong and Port Hedland. The events and services include a new renal dialysis facility being established at Jigalong; a feasibility study into construction of the Niminjarra Highway, a proposed new road linking the Punmu and Parnngurr communities; the Punmu Sports Carnival and the Western Desert Shield; and the Port Hedland Art Exhibition.
