Roy answers the call, and the challenge

ROY JUBOY was very pleased to get the phone call.

“It was Leon (Telfer Community Relations Superintendent, Leon van Erp), and he said ‘get on the bus, you’ve got a job’,” Roy recalled.
Leon initially visited Roy at his home in Looma to ascertain his interest in working at Telfer. Roy thought about the opportunity, and later phoned Leon to confirm his willingness.

Leon had a word with Pilbara Logistics Managing Director Geoff Stocker, and was able to secure work for Roy with the company.
That was three years ago. “I did lots of different things, driving rubbish trucks, water trucks, graders, and as a skip operator,” said Roy. “Now I train the new Indigenous boys.

“It was tough to begin with. I had to get used to the work, the 12-hour shifts, the two-week-on and one-week-off roster, and I missed the family, and they missed me.

“I kept forcing myself to be better at my job, to keep moving myself forward and not give up.
“Money is important, but if the job’s not good or you’re not prepared to get better at it, you won’t stay.”
Roy’s staying!
