State Govt cash injectionCommunity sporting groups in the Pilbara will get a helping hand from the State Government with the release of $411,000 in funding for improvements to three sporting facilities. The funding was part of the State Government’s $10.8 million Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund allocationfor 2006/2007. Projects funded include: ❖ $330,000 for modifications to the Newman Recreation Centre to increase the size of the fitness centre; ❖ $30,000 for a feasibility study for the redevelopment of the Paraburdoo and Tom Price Aquatic Centres; and ❖ $51,000 to upgrade change rooms and meeting rooms at the Tjulina Oval at Tom Price.Applications are assessed by the independent CSRFF Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from the Department of Sport and Recreation metropolitan and regional staff, Department of Education and Training, Lotterywest, local government and regional communities. Newcrest Mining Ltd’s Community Relations Superintendent Leon van Erp is the regional communities representative. “Unfortunately, some Aboriginal communities have not been applying for these grants, and subsequently have missed an opportunity to improve sporting facilities in their local communities,” Leon said. “We would encourage them to contact the Department of Sport and Recreation and the East Pilbara Shire to ensure they’re in the mix for next year’s grants.” |
